In the previous post (which you can read here if you haven’t yet) we broke down the verse of the month which is Ephesians 3:20. This month’s theme is Getting Started and it is all about maximizing your potential before you can even see your potential.
In this blog post we’re going to talk about the three mindset shifts that you need in order to create God-like dreams and visions for your life.
Mindset Shift #1 - What you see 👀, is what you get.
We’re going to take a look in Genesis for this post. I know you’re probably like “WHAT?! But I spent the past week meditating on Ephesians like you said to do in the previous post 😩”
Don’t worry, it’s all connected! These are supplemental verses to help us truly understand what God is saying in Ephesians 3:20. Plus what better way than to start at the beginning! Let’s look at Genesis 13 verse 14:
“After Lot had gone, the Lord said to Abram, “Look as far as you can see in every direction—north and south, east and west.
I am giving all this land, as far as you can see, to you and your descendants as a permanent possession.”
Genesis 13:14-15 NLT
In this verse God gave Abraham a vision. He said, “look as far as your eye can see and all the land is yours for I am giving it to you.”
Now why would God tell Abraham to look as far as he can see, when he has already given him all of the land?
That is because God is giving Abraham control over the limits of his vision. The first mindset shift you need is understanding that, “What you see is what you get.”
Just like Abraham, God is giving you control over the limits of the dreams he has given you!
It’s time to remove some limits. A reflection question to ask yourself, what limits am I putting on the visions and dreams God has given me?
Mindset Shift #2 - Action expands your vision 🏃🏾♀️🏃🏽♂️💨.
Let’s continue in Genesis 13,
“Go and walk through the land in every direction,
for I am giving it to you.””
Genesis 13:17 NLT
The next thing God is telling Abraham to do is to move, he said “go and walk”. God knows that Abraham does not have his vision (I mean even 20/20 vision doesn’t compare to the vision of an omnispective God!). That’s why in order to break the current limits of what he could see, Abraham needed to take some steps.
The second mindset shift you need is “action expands your vision.” Where and how far Abraham goes is limited by how far he allows himself to see and walk in faith. God’s plan for your life coming to pass is based on your actions towards that vision.
Genesis 13:17 is actually two fold because to be obedient to something that God is actively doing requires faith. God didn’t say to Abraham, “I already gave you the land. This is where it begins and this is where it ends.” God said “I am giving you the land!” As in a verb. That is the act of currently doing something. God is waiting for Abraham to trust in him to do the impossible because the more we move in faith, the more of our hearts desires God can give us.
Faith without works is dead, and works without faith creates limits that stop the potential of what faith could have done (a one sentence summary of James 2:14-26).
It’s time for action! Reflection question to ask yourself, in what ways can I begin taking steps of faith towards my vision and dream today?
Mindset Shift #3 - God wants us to dream bigger!
You’re probably wondering, “okay but how does this all connect with the 1st post in this series.” Don’t worry, I got you 🤗. The third mindset shift is what’s needed for us to truly understand what Paul is talking about in Ephesians 3:20, because really it’s the same concept God is telling Abraham in Genesis. It’s all about the power of faith.
In Ephesians 3:20, God is giving us permission to dream. In fact, God is actually encouraging us to dream bigger.
What’s your dream? What has God planted in your heart?
If you don’t know, it may not be because God didn’t tell you. You may have dismissed it because you couldn’t see it.
Remember, mindset shift number 1? “What you see 👀, is what you get.” That’s how important shifting our mindset is! Our ability to see or vision can be life or death for our dreams. Which is why God gave us this middle factor that changes everything, faith.
“Action is the place where faith becomes sight.”
– Jelilat Williams
It’s time to dream bigger! Reflection question to ask yourself, what dreams do I need to dig out of the “graveyard of impossible dreams” that I put them in? How can I challenge myself to dream bigger dreams for my life?
